6/183 The Swiss Cottage
GV II
Detached house. Late C19. Rockfaced limestone with brick
dressings to ground floor, timber-framing with brick nogging to
first floor, tiled roof with ceramic ridge cresting, diagonally-set
brick stacks. Single-storey and attic. T-plan. Original porch
with diamond glazing and half-glazed door in south angle between
wing and south range, single-light and 2-light cast-iron casements
to right, one gabled dormer with 2-light casement and finial to
gable. Wing projecting to left has 3-light casement to ground
floor, square bay and to jettied attic bay with gable. Range to
left has single-light casement. Left return has ground floor 3-
light casement and jettied attic with gable and 3-light casement.
Right return has similar windows to ground floor and jetty over;
all casements are cast-iron. Rear has no windows, single-storey
extension with slate roof. Interior not accessible at time of
survey (October 1986). Said to have been built by the Chafyn-
Grove family of Zeals House (q.v.), an excellently preserved
example of this genre.
