Experimental smallholder's dwelling, 1919-20, by Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research for the Board of Agriculture and
Fisheries, architect W.R. Jaggard. Brick in stretcher bond with
irregular headers, probably with cavity. Tiled roof. Two storeys
2 bays. Entrance to west gable end, a C20 door recessed in a
moulded timber frame, and flanking 6-pane sash windows. Front has
9 and 12-pane sashes with brick soldier course and brick sills.
Roof hipped, with gablets and boxed eaves. Central brick stack.
Single storey section to rear. Interior has precast concrete first
floor. Roof tiles nailed to battens and boarded under rafters.
One of the original five experimental houses built to achieve
economies using local materials and new methods.
