BULFORD BEACON HILL

6/86 Triangulation Pillar

II
Triangulation pillar, c1936 within enclosure and over gun end of
base of original Principal Triangulation of 1794. Concrete pillar
in form of square cone with bronze tripod base on top, and
benchmark on side (height 204m). Original triangulation point
consists of an iron cannon set vertically 3m in ground, the muzzle
filled and holding the north-east corner of the primary survey
triangle for western England, later protected by 1.9m concrete kerb
in form of chamfered square, and all set in triangular earthwork
with ditch of 2m wide. This point is 36,574 ft from the southern
point near Old Sarum.
