Church. C12, C13, C14, C15 and C17. Sandstone rubble, Westmorland slate
roofs. West tower, nave with aisles and south porch, chancel with north
aisle containing chapel and vestry. Tower: C14 with off-set angle
buttresses and projecting stair turret to south with 6-light vents and bench
mark to west face of projection. Ground floor: 2-light west window. First
floor: clock on west face, single-light window with trefoil head under flat
hood to north and south. Second floor: belfry openings of 2-lights, with
trefoil heads and blind quatrefoil in plate tracery above, on all 4 sides.
Embattled parapet corbelled out on heads, with gargoyles of goblin holding
spout, weather-vane on north-west corner. Nave: late C14 gabled south porch
with off-set diagonal buttresses with short pinnacles, doorway with
continuous hollow chamfer and label, weathered niche above and gable cross,
corbelled stone roof. Inside: stone benches and barrel vault, C13 doorway
with shafts and hollow mouldings, continuous 'green man' capitals. C13
south aisle with 2 south windows of 2 lights with trefoil heads, linked by
sill band, corbel table with heads and lion masks, gargoyles. 2-light west
window, 3-light east window with trefoil heads under flat lintel. c1620
north aisle of 3 bays with 2 windows under straight-sided pointed heads and
1 window with 3 trefoiled lights under a flat lintel. North doorway with a
pointed arch in a square lintel, above it a panel with medieval lettering.
Chancel: 3 bays divided by off-set buttresses. C14 windows, 1 single-light
and two 2-light with quatrefoils above, all under labels with medieval heads
on stops, and continuous sill band. East end: 4-light Perpendicular windo..<
and off-set buttresses. North chancel aisle: east window of vestry of
2 lights with plate tracery; north chapel window of 3 lights with 5 cusps
under straight-sided pointed heads. Interior: mid C12 north arcade to nave
with round piers, scallop capitals and round arches of 2 orders. C13 south
arcade to nave, Early English circular piers with plain bell capitals and
pointed arches of 2 chamfered orders. C14 tower arch of 2 chamfered orders,
springing from male figures. Early English chancel arch with heads on label
stops on both faces, and Early English corbels. Double-chamfered pointed
arch from chancel to north chapel, with C14/C15 screen set into the opening.
C14 pointed-arched doorway to vestry with continuous chamfered moulding.
Chancel north wall: aumbry with trefoil under ogee arch. Chancel south
wall: piscina with trefoil under ogee arch, stone bench sedile. Nave south
wall: roll moulding on arris of south doorway, sill band of semi circular
section with whorl and animal stops. Stone with cross-head set in east wall
of vestry. Medieval tomb-chest in north chapel to a Fitz Randall of
Spennithorne Old Hall, also 2 medieval bench ends. South aisle east wall:
medieval corbel for image with male and female heads. South aisle west
wall: medieval wall painting depicting Father Time. South aisle south wall:
royal coat of arms dated 1780, wall memorial to Hon. Anne Scroope d 1694 and
Francisca Scroope d 1731. Chancel south wall: wooden wall memorial to
Fr. Wyvill d 1649.
