House. Late C18. For John, son of Caleb Readshaw, Lord of the Manor of
East Grinton. Roughcast rubble, hipped stone slate roofs. 2 storeys.
The main house and 2 lower projecting wings to rear form 3 sides of a
courtyard, with railings across the fourth side. Garden front facing
north, 1:3:1, the middle section forming a 3-window, 5-sided canted bay,
formerly with central doorway, now window. Openings have ashlar
surrounds with keystones, sash windows with glazing bars. 2 ridge
stacks. Rear of main house: 2 first floor sash windows with glazing
bars; and a tall landing window in centre above C20 projecting porch.
Rear of left wing: Diocletian window above C20 door. Rear of right
wing: 1 bay of sashes in stone surrounds, C20 doorway. Return fronts of
main house have 1 bay of windows as garden front. Interior: drawing
room in canted bay has Adam style ceiling, frieze and fireplace. Wings
joined by cast-iron railings with finial heads set on a round-topped
plinth, with central gate, laid out on a gently curving plan. Whitaker,
