Farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. C16 or earlier, with later alterations.
Roughcast rubble, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, C16 main range, with
L-shaped cross wing. Main range: 3 bays, central bay projecting, rear
outshut. To left: early C19 4-panel door under fanlight with decorative
glazing bars in C16 segmental-arched, roll-moulded doorway with
keystone. C20 casement to central bay and sash to right. First floor:
4-pane sashes to left and right, blind panel to central bay. Ashlar
copings. End stack to right. Cross-wing to left has large projecting
chimneybreast to front. Rear: main range has sash with glazing bars to
right on first floor. Cross-wing has, to left, a C16 round-headed
doorway with chamfered surround and a blocked C16 single-light window to
its right; on the first floor a blocked C16 single-light window.
Kneelers, copings. Interior: in the ground floor room of the main
range, across the full length of the right end, is a C16 classical
entablature in ashlar sandstone, consisting of cornice, fluted frieze
and architrave, broken forward as if above 4 pilasters, the first
3 having sculpted masks, probably added. A chamfered round-arched
doorway, now blocked, connected the main range to the cross-wing in the
front corner. Harrison B. and Hutton B., Vernacular Houses in North
Yorkshire and Cleveland, 1984, p 22; 'NYCVBSC Report', No 41, includes
photocopy of C16 map showing main range described as 'The Hall' of the
nunnery.
