4 almshouses, now one house. Dated 1732, altered 1816. For Rev William
Smith. Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, stone slate roof. Single
storey,4 cells. Chamfered plinth. Chamfered rusticated quoins. In second
and fifth bays, board doors in ashlar surrounds. 2-light flat-faced mullion
windows in ashlar surrounds. Cavetto cornice. Shaped kneelers, ashlar
copings. Corniced ashlar stacks at ends and in centre. In centre of front
wall, architraved panel inscribed "THIS HOSPITAL was Founded and Endowed by
d
WILLIAM SMITH RECTOR OF MELSONBY in the 82 year of his age Anno Domini
1732". The Hospital was founded for 4 poor persons, including the
schoolmaster, each door giving entry to 2 cells, one on either side. In
1818 the Hospital was repaired and altered to house 2 inmates, one of them
the parish clerk and schoolmaster. VCH i, p 64. White, History, Gazetteer
