Gate piers to the Manor House

(formerly listed as Entrance gate piers to Moulton Manor)

4.2.69

GV
II
Gate piers. Mid-late C17. For the Smithson family. Ashlar sandstone. Square piers with banded rustication. Capitals have torus architraves, scotia friezes and classical cornices. Ball finials rest on shafts supported by four ogee volutes. The gate piers are shown in front of the house in the early C18 drawing of Moulton Manor in Samuel Buck's Yorkshire Sketchbook (1979) and have therefore been moved to their present position to the north-east of the house.
