Description

MOULTON MOULTON
NZ 2203-2303

10/102 Gate piers at Moulton
Hall
4.2.69

GV II

Gate piers. Mid C17. For the Smithson family. Ashlar. Chamfered
rusticated piers without bases. Elaborate capitals of architrave, cyma
reversa frieze and dentil cornice. Ball finials on deeply-moulded bases.
Eastern pier appears to have been renewed. The gate piers are probably
those shown in front of the house in the early C18 drawing of Moulton Hall
in Samuel Buck's Yorkshire Sketchbook (1979), p353, in which case they have
been moved to their present position north of the hall.
