GV II

Scorton station, now house. c1846. By G T Andrews for George Hudson's
Great North of England Railway. Rubble brought to course with ashlar
dressings, Welsh slate roofs. Jacobethan style. T-shaped plan, 1 and 2
storeys, 1:1:1 bays, second and third bays of 2 storeys, the second gable-
end to the railway line, projecting forward slightly, and projecting back as
the spine of the T, the third with a contemporary single-storey rear
outshut. Quoins. Elevation to former railway line: windows have double-
chamfered quoined surrounds. Left bay: C20 garage door and railway clock by
Darling and Wood of York. Second bay: on ground floor, 2-bay arcade with
flanking short stepped buttresses, segmental-pointed arches with a central
octagonal pier, its capital bearing a corbel. Recessed behind it, 2-light
window and, to right, board door in Tudor-arched surround. Similar doorways
to left and right returns of recess, that to right blocked. Above arcade,
2-light first-floor window with relieving arch. To gable, bargeboards
decorated with Perpendicular-style tracery, pendants in angles. Third bay:
ground-floor 3-light window; 2-light first-floor window. Right return:
matching bargeboards to gable, also to verge of rear lean-to roof. Tall
brick stacks flanking central bay. Space between platforms now infilled in
front of station to form garden. At rear of house, a walled yard gave
privacy to the house and its outbuildings from the Station Yard (qv).
