7/159 High Smithy Holme

Farmhouse and byre under 1 roof. Early C18. Coursed rubble, stone slate
roof. 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Right-hand bay is of higher
quality than the rest, with higher eaves, better stone, and better ashlar
dressings, including quoins. It contains the entrance, with board door and
window above, in ashlar surrounds. Between other 2 bays, board door below
deep lintel and floating weathercourse. Stone surrounds to square windows
in bay 1 and fire-windows in bay 2. Byre on left has quoins to left end,
projecting through-stones and 2 ashlar surround doorways, with board door to
left, right one blocked. Believed to be the house of Anthony Clarkson who prepared
all of the tithe maps for Swaledale.
