Gothick folly, now ruinous. Early C19. For the 6th Duke of Leeds of Hornby
Castle (qv). Sandstone, lined with brick. 1 storey plus basement. East
side: ashlar. 1:1:1 bays. Central canted bay with pointed-arched doorway
set on 5 steps, with flanking matching windows, the top of the arches below
traceried gables. Basement windows of quatrefoils within pointed arches.
Parapet with triangular crenellations and corner pinnacles. West side:
coursed rubble. 2 upper-floor windows. Offset plinth. At basement level:
to right, 4-centred arched doorway; to left, 2 square window openings under
deep lintels. At upper level: tall pointed-arched quoined surrounds for
windows. String to overhanging ashlar parapet as on east side. The museum
contained a collection of stuffed local birds and animals. The basement was
occupied by the night-watchman and his family.
