Description

PATRICK BROMPTON A 684
SE 29 SW (south side)

4/83 Ashla

GV II

House. Late C18 - early C19. Coursed rubble, stone slate roof. 2 storeys,
3 bays. South front: central glazed door below 3-pane overlight in ashlar
surround with herringbone tooling and interrupted jambs. Ground-floor
windows: 16-pane sashes in canted bay windows with flat lead roofs. First-
floor windows: sashes with glazing bars below deep lintels. Ashlar coping.
Brick end stacks. To left, lower range of 3 bays, converted from cottages
in 1953, not of special interest. Rear: rubble; on ground floor to left,
canted bay as before; central round-arched staircase window with glazing
bars, with bricks to arch; 3 bays of side-sliding sash windows with openings
partially in brick. Interior: doors of 6 fielded panels; staircase with
stick balusters; in ground-floor room to right, marble fireplace with Ionic
columns, probably not original to house. The design of the house is very
similar to that of its neighbour, Laurel House (qv), which faces north.
