Marked on Ordnance Survey map as Caldbergh Hall. Manor house. Dated 1685
but possibly of earlier origin, and with C18 and C19 additions and
alterations. Coursed rubble, stone slate roof. 1-shaped plan, with C17
range facing east, formerly of 3 storeys, now of 2 storeys and loft,
2-storey C18 wing to south-west and single-storey C19 outshut in angle
between the 2 ranges. C17 range, east front: 6 first-floor windows. Ground
floor: in sixth bay, C20 part-glazed door in quoined surround with moulded
arris and triangular soffit to lintel; on lintel, recessed panel with raised
characters "CT", "AT" set in garland and "1685". In first, second, fourth
and fifth bays, 2-light double-chamfered mullion windows, with continuous
hoodmoulds to first pair and to second pair and doorway. Blocked fire
window with stepped head in third bay. First floor: in first, second,
fourth and fifth bays, double-chamfered cross windows, probably a C19
integration of 2 floors of mullion windows; chamfered fire window in third
bay; chamfered round window in sixth bay. Second floor: blocked segmental-
arched chamfered lights in third and sixth bays. Shaped kneelers, ashlar
coping. Central corniced ashlar ridge stack. Left return of C17 range:
first-floor blocked window, probably of 3 lights, under hoodmould with
paterae on stops; second-floor double-chamfered window of 3 blocked stepped
lights with stepped hoodmould. Interior: in room to left of door, are
chamfered segmental-arched fireplace. Some old doors of 3 fielded panels.
The house is reputedly the birthplace of Miles Coverdale (1488-1568),
translator of the Bible.
