Folly. Mid C18. Probably by Daniel Garrett for Sir Conyers D'Arcy of Aske
Hall (qv). Ashlar limestone. 2 storeys, larger lower storey supporting
central tower. In Gothick style. Lower storey: plan consists of 2
concentric circles, the inner one forming the lower stage of the tower, and
the outer one broken by projections forming a Greek cross, with concave
sides and convex ends, all the walls battered and with splayed bases, and
with 2 small blocked oculi in the ends of each cross arm, and another at a
higher level in each side of the arms. In the north-west arm, facing Aske
Hall, a blocked pointed-arched doorway with two steps up to it. Upper
tower: circular in plan, with 4 window openings with projecting sills and
trefoiled heads, and with two small oculi between each pair. Band below
crenellated parapet. Interior not accessible, but steps visible up to
parapet walk.
