Monument. c1814. Commemorating Sir Matthew Hutton. Sandstone ashlar.
Obelisk within railed enclosure. Square-plan obelisk, set on dado with
corner buttresses and cornice, set on square base with torus cornice. Panel
on south side has Latin inscription commemorating Sir Matthew Hutton of
Macclesfield who died 12 December 1814 aged 35 years, who had requested
burial at this, his favourite viewpoint, at just under 1000 feet on the
family's Marske estate. The obelisk is set within a railed enclosure with
low wall with chamfered coping and square gate piers with pyramidal caps.
The wrought-iron railings and matching gate were replaced in the 1930s.
