16/134 Tofta House



Farmhouse. Late C16 - early C17 with later alterations. Rubble, Welsh
slate roofs. T-shaped plan with central rear range; 3 storeys now 2; 4 bays
to front elevation. Coursed rubble, much of first 2 bays constructed of
ashlar stones robbed from Ravensworth Castle (qv). Quoins. In second bay,
C20 part-glazed 6-panel door in ashlar surround. Sash windows with glazing
bars with projecting sills and deep stone lintels: to left and right of
ground-floor window in first bay, part-surrounds of mullion windows. Shaped
kneelers, moulded ashlar coping. Stacks at ends and between second and
third bays, that to left end corniced, the other 2 with brickwork at top,
that to right end partly external. Rear of rear wing: quoins, shaped
kneelers, moulded coping, gable stack; left return of rear wing has blocked
second-floor 2-light chamfered mullion window. Left return: mainly of
reused medieval ashlar; ground- and first-floor fire windows, with blocked
ashlar surrounds. Right return: blocked chamfered first-floor window to
right of stack; shuttered loft opening to left of stack. North Yorkshire
