Description

ASKRIGG LODGE YARD
SD 99 SW
19/6 The Wool Room
GV II
Wool Room, now partly used as a garage. Late C18 - early C19. Rubble,
stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 first-floor windows to west elevation. On
ground floor, doorway to left, and 12-pane window. 2 small openings on
first floor. North elevation consists of a long range with external steps
up to the first floor. Large C20 openings on ground floor. Fleeces were
brought to the Wool Room from the surrounding farms for excise purposes.
Access to it was probably through Robinson's Gateways (qv). It is a rare
survival of a building representing the historically important Wensleydale
woollen and knitting industries. Included for group value. Hartley M and
Ingilby J, Yorkshire Village, (1979), p 121.
