Market cross. 1830. By Leonard Hesletine, an Askrigg mason. Ashlar. Base
of 6 octagonal steps. Octagonal cross shaft with square base. Replaces an
older cross, the market charter having been granted in 1587. Hartley M and
Ingilby J, Yorkshire Village, (1979), pp 29, 148.
