9/29 The Big Laithe,
approximately 300 metres
south-east of Nappa Hall
GV II
Building for cows and hay. Early-mid C19. Rubble, stone slate roof.
2 storeys, irregular H-plan. South elevation: central board barn doors
under timber lintel. Side bays, ground floor: 2:1 small lights. First
floor: central window, now blocked, with cambered lintel of rubble
voussoirs. Side bays: pitching doorways. Shaped kneelers, original coping
mostly missing. Rear elevation: central board barn doors under segmental
arch of rubble voussoirs, 8 vents. Left return: 2 board stable doors under
segmental arches of rubble voussoirs, window in between. The building
housed 40 cattle, a very much larger number than usually accommodated in
Dales field barns.
