Gate piers; gates and railings. Early C19. For the Duke of Northumberland.
Ashlar sandstone piers, wrought-iron gates and railings. 2 piers
approximately 2 metres in height, monolithic cylindrical shafts on Tuscan
bases, with Tuscan abaci and capstan-like caps. With piers, 2 gates, of
square-section bars with spiked tops and 2 horizontal rails about one-third
of way up, the lower containing the tops of intermediate bars, the upper
with intermediate spikes, and with diagonal paired bracing curved members
from outer bottom corners to inner ends of lower rails. To right, a smaller
matching gate, and on either side railings with cast-iron urn finials to
standards, braced with ogee-section struts in front and behind. Erected as
an entrance to Stanwick Hall, but the rest of the carriage drive from here
was never completed.
