of Hartforth Hall

GV II

Fountain and wall. Probably c1900. For Major Sheldon Cradock. Ashlar
sandstone. U-shaped plan of steps having turned balustrade with chamfered
terminals at upper level. Between lower flights, ashlar wall with shell
niche having pilastered architrave and containing male mask discharging
water from mouth into circular basin; flanked by plain pilasters. Behind,
coursed sandstone wall with chamfered parapet, containing central flight of
steps which form access to terrace on which was Orangery (qv). Included for
group value.
