10.9.54 Thornesfield Farmhouse
and attached barn

Farmhouse and attached barn, probably both of mid to later C17 date. Rubble with
stone slate roof to house but asbestos to the barn. Two-storey farmhouse, of 2 units
with continuous outshut at rear. The entry is at the right hand end of the front,
protected by an enclosed stone porch, gabled with kneelers. Chamfered
triangular-headed doorway. There is an unmoulded doorway to the left hand room, but
the remaining openings are double chamfered mullion windows, with hoodmoulds to ground
floor, of 2 lights (formerly 4) and 3 lights (formerly 5) below, and 2 lights
(formerly 3), 2 and 2 (backing each mullion). The side and rear also have 2-light
mullion windows, those to rear lacking mullions, and one 5-light lacking only one
mullion. Two chimneys.
Interior of farmhouse: right hand room has a heck and 2 beams, with chamfered doorways
to the outshut and next room.
The barn has large quoins to 2 original outshuts at the front which have round-headed
small lights. A chamfered doorway stands in the recessed wall connecting the barn to
the house. Inside is a heavy truss resting on corbels.
