Large house. C16 and C17. Ashlar, coursed squared stone, graduated stone
slate roof. 3 storeys and basement, 2 bays. Quoins. Chamfered plinth.
Central porch, round headed doorway with moulded impost bands continuous
round the porch, gabled with shaped kneelers and moulded stone coping. The
inner board door has a chamfered surround with a 3-centred arch. Right-hand
bay: 2 storeys, ground floor: Great Hall window is of 8-lights, double
chamfered, mullioned with 2 transoms, hoodmould plus some C17 diamond panel
glazing. Above an 8-light double-chamfered mullion window with a transom,
hoodmould. Left-hand bay: basement has 2-light chamfered mullioned window.
To ground and first floor, 6-light chamfered mullioned windows with
transoms, hoodmould. Second floor, a 6-light double chamfered mullioned
window. The light to left of centre is blind. All windows with central
major mullions. Shaped kneelers, moulded stone coping, end stacks and 1 to
ridge. Left return: half-glazed door in chamfered surround with segmental
arch. 8 mullioned windows, 6 with hoodmoulds. That to gable is a stepped
3-light window. Right return: small porch, square-headed chamfered doorway,
finials to gable. Rear: similar mullion and transom windows. A series of
five 2-light double chamfered mullion stair windows, stepped. Interior:
Great Hall has diamond shaped large stone flag floor. Large stone
inglenook. Mantelpiece with plaster coat of arms. Above Great Hall a
drawing room of the same size with large frieze of C16/C17 plasterwork all
the way round the room. The main staircase is a dogleg stair rising all the
way up the house with a continuous newel, the balusters are similar to those
on the gallery. The interior is quite unspoiled retaining much of the
original fabric. Built by the father of Sir William Craven, a former Lord
Mayor of London.
