8/44 Beamsley Hospital
(north range)


Hospital and chapel. 1593 and C17. Rubblestone, ashlar, graduated stone
slate roofs. Circular in plan. 1 storey with central chapel lit by
clerestory. Central board door set in chamfered surround with four-centred
arch. To either side small 1-light chamfered window openings. Windows are
2-light with chamfered mullions. Circular clerestory on roof: 3-light
chamfered mullion windows with leaded panes with 3 stacks between, above
conical roof finished with a finial. Interior: central chapel lit by
clerestory, around the chapel are arrayed 7 radiating rooms, 5 of which open
onto the chapel and 2 into the entrance passage. Most with original
fireplaces. In the chapel are a circle of bobbin pews and a pulpit.
History: Lady Margaret Russell, Countesse of Cumberland built the chapel.
