Formerly 1 house, now nursery and two houses. c.1780. Rock-faced stone, slate
roof. 2 storeys, 7 bays with end bays slightly recessed; 1:5:1 with each division
punctuated by projecting quoins. Central entrance has engaged Ionic columns
supporting an open pediment. Round-headed fanlight and c.1970 door. Projecting
centre has 4 ground floor and 5 upper floor windows all with moulded architraves
and sashes. Two of these windows together form what is effectively a 2-light
window in each floor of the end bay, each light containing sashes. Extreme
left-hand light on each storey is blind. The modillioned eaves breaks forward
over the 5 central bays. Hipped roof with 3 equally spaced stacks. Right-hand
return has a c.mid C19 canted extension with an additional porch containing the
entrance to Audley. In the centre of the rear is a 2-storey 3-bay projection
dated 1857 with initials EHD (Elizabeth Dawson). Interior to Marshfield contains
a fine octagonal hall leading to a late C18 dog-leg staircase with open string,
turned balusters and wreathed handrail. A massive staircase window at the
rear (now partially blocked to form a door to the 1857 extension) has cruck pieces
to the jambs, a round-head and pulvinated frieze with louvred leaf decoration.
Consoles support a broken pediment. Several Adam style fireplaces in situ.
Entrance to Marshfield has square gatepiers with base, capital and pyramidal top;
low garden wall. Railings c.1980. Reputedly built for Thomas Salisbury of Newton
in Bowland.
