Description

SD 9749 CARLETON SWAN STREET

The Tithe Barn (formerly
10/65 listed under General
as School and former
6.10.69 Schoolhouse)

GV II

Former school and schoolhouse, now village hall, probably mid C19 but perhaps
incorporating earlier work. Rubble with stone slate roof. The school of one
storey and the house of two stand in a continuous range. Vernacular detail.
Single storey porch with four-light double chamfered stone mullion and transom
window and doorway with slight ogee to lintel; to each side one 10-light similar
window. All these have hoodmoulds as has the door to the right and the 3-light
windows, one to each storey, of the house. Three chimneys. The roof is said
to be of heavy king-post construction and to retain some timbers from a tithe
barn on the site.
