18/30 Weets Cross

- II

Boundary stone. Medieval, restored mid C20. For the Fountains Abbey
estates. Gritstone. Base approximately 40 x 80 cm and 50 cm high; the
shaft approximately 1.5 m tall is set into a square socket in the top and
concreted in. The stone stands at the junction of five townships and was
important as a boundary stone as well as a way marker between the Malham
Moor sheep pasture and the route to Fountains Abbey. In 1947 the base was
built into the south side of the Weets gate wall; the shaft may be a
replacement but it is very weathered. A. Raistrick, Malham and Malham Moor,
1983, p77
