CONISTONE WITH KILNSEY
MAIN STREET
(east side)
Conistone
Barn at SD 9813 6744

II

Barn. Probably early C18, altered C19. Limestone rubble, graduated stone
slate roof. 3 bays, the end bays with outshuts on each side of the central
cart entrance, creating a porch under a catslide roof. Quoins. The cart
entrance has double board doors with strap hinges under a massive single
block lintel, broken at the time of resurvey. The porch has quoined jambs
and a slim wooden lintel; within the porch board doors with strap hinges
open into rooms in the outshuts. A blocked square opening close to ground
level in bay 3. Changes in the masonry indicate the line of the original
eaves. Rear: central board door with row of pigeon holes to the left: the
right bay projects slightly. Left return: Board door right of centre with
chamfered quoins and shallow-arched lintel; narrow door with slight lintel
and square pitching door above to right. Inserted square window centre,
mucking out hole far left. 3 rows of pigeon holes in the gable with a
projecting stone sill below the lower row. Random projecting through
stones and 4 small vents or scaffold holes. Interior not inspected at
resurvey. The rebuilding of wooden houses in the mid to late C17 was
closely followed by a period of enclosure and rebuilding of laithes in this
area in the early C18. This barn had a central threshing floor and storage
area with a large area for hay and straw and probably stalls for cattle at
the left end. The outshuts were used as calf-pens. The increase in the
size of farm waggons and the variety of machinery in the C19 necessitated
the raising of the cart entrance and the eaves of the building. Included
for group value.
