21/106 The Old Hall

House. Early-mid C17. Coursed grey and brown limestone rubble, with patches
of rendering, gritstone dressings, graduated stone slates. 2 storeys, 5
bays, on a sloping site with foundations exposed and flat stone plinth to
right of bay 2. Quoins. Glazed door bay 2; chamfered quoined jambs and
triangular door head, lintel renewed. Recessed and chamfered mullion
windows throughout: bay 1 of 4 lights to ground floor, a similar restored
window above; bay 2, a possibly inserted 2-light window above the door; to
right of door: ground floor window of 2 lights, mullion missing, and a
narrow segmental-headed window above. Bay 3: a 4-light mullion and transom
window to ground floor, and a 4-light window above, both with hollow
mouldings to the chamfers. Bay 4: fenestration as bay 3. The original
windows have returned hood moulds. There is a row of 10 pigeon holes below
the eaves to left of the bay 4 window. 4 plain chimney stacks, to each
gable and between bays 1 and 2,and 3 and 4. Rear: central C20 glazed door
with triangular door head; a 2-light mullioned window to right. Remainder
are small square chamfered openings; an inserted C20 window to right.
Quoins on this facade suggest that bays 1 and 2 are additional. Left
return: 2-light mullioned window 1st floor left, one mullion restored.
Right return: a 2-light mullioned window ground floor, a blocked 3-light
mullioned window in the gable. Interior: panelling with moulded framing to
central room. _
