Description

SD 96 SW MALHAM MOOR SMEARBOTTOMS LANE
(east side, off)

18/137 New House

- II

Farmhouse and attached byre. Mid-late C17 with C18 alterations. Gritstone
rubble, graduated stone slate roof. 2-storey, 2-bay house with rear outshut
and added central single-storey porch, with a 2-storey byre to left.
Quoins. House: board door to gabled porch with quoined jambs and plain
lintel, a 3-light flat-faced mullion window to left, one mullion removed; a
4-pane sash in a large opening with moulded lintel to right. Two 2-light
recessed chamfered mullion windows to first floor. Byre: a board door with
ventilation grille to right, in an alternate quoined surround, the lintel
having a shallow triangular head under a straight chamfer; a loading door
with plain sill and lintel to first floor, far left. A small recessed
chamfered window with 4-pane frame to ground floor centre. A straight
joint with quoins at first floor height between house and byre. Gable
copings, end stacks to house, the left stack just outside the line of the
quoins. Rear: 2-light recessed chamfered mullion windows to outshut.
Interior: not inspected in detail at resurvey. The living room left of the
porch has a large fireplace with plain C18 stone surround and a C19 cast-
iron range; the stack is external and projects into the barn. The house is
a good example of a C17 vernacular building, little altered. It probably
had a hearth-passage plan originally, the door (now to the byre) opening
into an unheated room. The porch entrance appears to be additional,
suggesting an early C18 alteration which coincides with the fireplace and
therefore the partition wall between house and byre - the quoins between
the two elements are only at the first floor, implying that the original
house was single storey. Tile first-floor loading door is also C18 in
style. The house is very similar to Middle House (q.v.)
