GV II

Milepost. Late C19. Cast iron, gritstone support. Triangular section,
rounded top. Lettering in relief capitals, top: "KEIGHLEY AND KENDAL /
ROAD / KILDWICK". Left face; "SKIPTON 4½ MILES / SETTLE 19½ MILES / KENDAL
49 MILES". Right face; "KEIGHLEY 5 MILES". The Kendal-Keighley road via
Skipton and Kirkby Lonsdale, was developed in the early C18. The purpose
of the road was to speed and increase the flow of wool from Westmorland
and Craven to the West Riding clothiers at Halifax market. A. Raistrick,
