Guide post. Early-mid C19. Gritstone. Triangular in section,
approximately 60 centimetres high. Square-cut incised lettering, left
face: "LINTON / SKIPTON " with arrow painted in black. Right face:
"KILNSEY / THRESHFIELD" with arrow. The stone is one of several in the
area positioned when the roads were being improved to carry the increased
loads of lead from Grassington Moor, and to help in the movement of cattle
to the expanding Skipton cattle market. The turnpike road along the south-
west bank of the river Wharfe was established in the late C18 and linked
Addingham with Askrigg turnpike. A. Raistrick, Old Yorkshire Dales, 1967,
p171.
