Barn and byre. Early - mid C17 with alterations probably 1825. Large
square gritstone blocks and rubble, remains of graduated stone slate roof.
2 bays, left bay having a projecting cart porch, the narrower right bay
formerly storeyed. Massive quoins. Double board doors to cart entrance,
the opening composed of flanking corbelled wall-ends, a left block incised
"l825"; a wooden lintel rests on top of the stonework above the corbels and
is protected by 3 projecting stone slabs forming a crude dripmould; above
the dripmould a 3-part lintel, possibly always in 3 pieces. Byre door
right: the right jamb quoined and tied in with the building quoins; the
lintel chamfered; the loft jamb rebuilt with a single thin stone, widening
the opening. A massive stone block and projecting drip-stone slab to left
of the byre door, built up below with rubble and mortar blocking. 2 small
square vent holes to upper floor and a square window opening below former
eaves line. Rear: to right of centre; a large crudely cut lintel to a
probable former doorway, now window; concrete surround to window (possibly
former byre door) to far left. Interior: the roof, lofting and inner wall
linings collapsed at time of resurvey. A recess in gable wall to right of
byre entrance, possibly a blocked doorway, or a cupboard recess. Concrete
byre stalls to right end, walls plastered and limewashed. The dangerous
condition made detailed investigation impossible. An unusually small barn,
using massive and crudely worked materials; the cart entrance corbelling is
found in other early barns in the area, and uses the structural
techniques as earlier fireplaces.
