Description

CONISTON COLD A65
SD 95 NW AND SW

3/35 and 5/35 Coniston Bridge and
causeway to east

II

Public road bridge and adjoining causeway, 1763. by John Carr of York (then one
of the Surveyors of Bridges to the West Riding) or remodelled by him at that
date. The bridge is of ashlar with three round arches and high triangular
cutwaters. There are bands outside the voussoirs and one at the base of the
parapet which is solid and sweeps out slightly to end piers. At the mid point on
each side there is a further pier with pyramidal cap. The causeway runs for 75
yards east and is of rubble, with four low archways. Its parapet appears to
have been replaced.
