Description

GARGRAVE CHURCH STREET
SD 95 SW (east side)

5/63 No,13 and Taira House
(formerly listed as
The Vicarage

II

House, now in two occupations, apparently of two C18 builds (No.13) and one of
the early C19 (Taira House). Plaster, rubble, and stone slate roofs. Two
storeys. From the south the left hand end is in rubble, with large modern
windows to the ground floor and two sashes with glazing bars above. Next is a
plastered stretch of five bays, sashed with glazing bars, those to the first
floor in plain stone surrounds with a bead on the arris. To right is a tall
addition of two bays, sashed with glazing bars. This has a doorcase with
consoles and cornice. The gable to the street has been built out a foot beyond
the quoins. The roof has stone gutter brackets to all sections. Windows at the
rear are all sashes with glazing bars, except for a C19 canted bay. Tall
round-headed stair window to the rear of Taira House. Rebuilding of No.13, The
Vicarage, is recorded in 1728 and 1743 (J M Dinsdale, History of the Church and
Parish of St Andrew, Gargrave 1966)
