Canal Bridge No 170 and
integral lock

Public road bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and lock, c.1790. Robert
Whitworth, engineer. Dressed Stone. Single segmental arch with rusticated
vousoirs, band and solid parapet, both pitched at the midpoint. Curving
abutments end in piers. The footings are the prolonged retaining walls of the
lock about 15 feet high at their highest, of dressed stone rebated for wooden
gates.
