Country house. Of several C18 and C19 builds with work by John Carr, James
Wyatt, John Foss and Robert Lugar. Ashlar with graduated stone slate roofs.
Plan: east range with north wing set back on right and south wing to rear
left. 2 and 3 storeys. East front: early C18 in origin, 3 storeys, 5 bays,
left-hand bay 2 storeys, octagonal towers to each end with castellated
parapets. Bay 2 has 4-storey round tower in front of projecting bay and
with porte-cochere with 1/2-glazed double door, round-headed sashes above, and
machicolated embattled parapet. Bay 1 has tall 3-light mullioned window
with round-headed sashes and hood-mould; bay 4 has similar window of 4-
lights. First and second floors: bays 1 and 4 have 2-light mullioned
windows with sashes, bays 3 and 5 have narrow 8-pane sashes. All windows
have hood-moulds. Embattled parapets, hipped roofs. To right, set back,
north wing: 3 storeys, 12 bays. Central 6-panel door with fanlight flanked
by sashes with fanlights. Central 3 bays break forward with octagonal
towers to each side. Round tower to right of block with embattled parapet.
Sashes with glazing bars to either side in blind arcades. First floor:
sashes with glazing bars. Second floor: band. Sashes with glazing bars and
hood-moulds. Embattled parapet. Hipped roof, ridge stacks. Left return:
central 3-storey portion of 9 bays, central 3 bays bowed, 2-storey single
bay projecting on left and 2-storey, 3-bay end of east range projecting on
right. Left- and right-hand projections have octagonal corner towers and
mullioned sashes. Central portion has 24-pane sashes to ground-floor
windows with unequally-hung 12-pane sashes to first floor, band and sashes
with glazing bars to second floor. Embattled parapet. Interior: the south
range has large drawing room by James Wyatt 1793 with fine neo-classical
plasterwork and chimneypiece. More restrained rooms to either side also by
Wyatt. First floor has panelled room by John Carr with full length fluted
pilasters. Rear wing has a large late C19 open-well staircase of 3 storeys.
