3/1 Church of St Nicholas
Church. Late C12 with later alterations. Magnesian limestone ashlar and
sandstone rubble with red plain tile roof. Continuous nave and chancel,
with south porch and north vestry. West end: single round-arched window in
chamfered surround under hood-mould. At apex a bell-turret supported on
corbel frieze with single bell-light and surmounted by cross. South porch:
3 orders of arches decorated with chevron moulding on badly weathered
capitals decorated with water-leaf and ram's horn moulding. 2 orders of
nook shafts, the inner order being plain. Nave and chancel: 2-course
moulded plinth. 3 round-headed windows to either side in chamfered
surrounds (some recut) and under recut hood-moulds. To south side a round-
arched priest's doorway. East end has group of 3 similar windows under
oculus window in chamfered surround with ball moulding. A recut cross at
apex. Eaves band. Ashlar coping to gable ends. Interior has whitewashed
walls, otherwise no special features.
