4/64 The Old Schoolhouse

Former schoolmasters' house, schoolroom and barn, now house. 1787 for
Robert Fairfax; with infill of 1908 to join with barn of no particular
interest. Magnesian limestone ashlar with Welsh slate roof and gault brick
stacks. 2-storey, 2-bay house with single storey, 2-bay schoolroom to left.
Step to central 6-fielded panel door in moulded shouldered archiLave under
hood. Windows: 12-pane sashes to ground floor, 20-pane sashes to first
floor all with ashlar cills and under hoods supported by consoles. Ashlar
coping to gable ends. End stacks, that to right ashlar, that to left,
brick. Schoolroom has C20 multi-paned casement windows under C20 hoods on
consoles. Badly weathered marble plaque between. Interior: shutters to
ground floor rooms of house but otherwise not fully inspected. H Speight,
