Incorrectly shown on Ordnance Survey map as Hudgin Lane. Country house.
Mid C18; extended 1835 on datestone; loggia added 1839; further alteration
and extension 1904. For the Langley family. Dressed sandstone and reused
tooled medieval sandstone; ashlar quoins and dressings; timber eaves band;
Westmorland slate roof. Entrance front: C18 front of 3 storeys, 6 bays, the
4 centre bays pedimented and quoined and breaking forward; flanked by 3-
storey, 2-bay C19 extension wings and further 2-storey, 3-bay ranges.
Single-storey, 5-bay service wings project to left and right, joined to the
main front and ranges by 2-storey link bays. Extension wings have
rusticated pilasters. Single-storey canted porch added to centre of C18
front contains half-glazed double doors beneath a patterned fanlight within
a pedimented and rusticated Doric door-case. Ground-floor end bays to C18
front are formed as aedicules. Ground- and first-floor windows are 12-pane
sashes, those to second floor unequal 9-pane sashes, all in raised, keyed
surrounds. Keyed oeil-de-boeuf to main pediment. Modillion cornice.
Attached Doric colonnade to ground floor of 2-storey ranges, and projecting
eaves cornice with plain parapet above. Service wing to left has 6-panel
door with Gibbs surround to centre; both wings have triple-keyed window
surround, and domed cupolas with wrought-iron weather-vanes. Coped gables
to main roof, with end and centre left and right stacks. Half-hipped roofs
to wings, all roofed separately. Garden front. 3-storey, 9-bay front
arranged 2:1:3:1:2, with central 5-bay breakforward incorporating full-
height 3-window bow; single-storey 4-bay wings added to left and right.
Glazed doors to recessed bays. 12-pane sashes to ground and first floors,
and unequal 9-pane sashes to second floor. All openings have plain keyed
surrounds. Doric loggia to ground floor, dated 1839, carries first-floor
balcony with balustrade and urns. Modillion cornice with plain parapet
above. Extension wings have canted bays with radial-glazed sashes in raised
round-arched surrounds. Plain parapet with urns above. Half-hexagonal
roof. Left and right return fronts. Venetian windows to first and second
floor, with an oculus to each gable end. Interior. Ground-floor centre
room on garden side has Ionic fireplace with fluted column jambs and moulded
frieze. Panelled ceiling of moulded plaster. Room to left has a screen of
fluted Corinthian columns and a dentilled cornice extending around the room.
