EGTON DELVES
NZ 70 SE
7/5 Delves Cottage
- II*
House. Probably C17, restored and extended 1975-77. Cruck-framed,
encased in sandstone rubble, with thatched roof; extension roofed in
pantiles. Originally a longhouse, now 3-cell, hearth-passage plan.
1-storey, 2½-bay original front, with lower 1-storey, 1-bay extension at
left. C20 board cross-passage door at left end of original front. 2-pane
firewindow in chamfered surround to right of door. 6-pane sash and 4-pane
casement, both with painted timber lintels, in centre and at right end.
Single ridge stack dated 1713 towards left end. Interior. Three pairs of
full crucks with tie beams and collars. Studding survives above the tie
beam in partition between rooms to right of cross passage. Inglenook
fireplace with stone heck, chamfered bressummer and carved witch post
survive. Spice cupboard with recessed panelled door on butterfly hinges
and drawer beneath, to left of fireplace. Harrison, B and Hutton, B,
