as Barn at Newbiggin Hall)

Range of byres, originally with loft. Probably late C17 with C20
alteration. For the Salvin family. Squared sandstone with corrugated
asbestos roof. Hall front: 1½ storeys, 6 bays. Three quoined and
chamfered doorways, the centre one with plank door, the end ones partly
blocked by pivoting windows. Two ventilation slits between centre and
right end openings, three to left. Coped gables and shaped kneelers.
Yard front: repeats Hall front with addition of cart opening beneath
timber lintel to left of centre. Interior: five collar trusses with
tenoned and pegged apex. A very early example of a planned, purpose-
built farmbuilding range.
