Public drinking fountain. 1856 incorporating lion's head of earlier date.
By John Allan of Hempsyke. Stone trough, sandstone rubble wall, marble
lion's head, brass cup and copper plaques. Water flows from lion's head
into large trough set into square-headed niche in wall approximately 1.75
metre high. Wall top shaped in centre between volutes, to encompass
semicircular inset panel, carved: A
HEMPSYKE
Wall over niche contains three engraved plaques:-
Weary stranger Here you see This stream is pure as if from
An emblem of true Charity Heaven it ran
Richly my bounty I bestow And while I praise the Lord I'll
Made by a kindly hand to flow thank the man.
And I have fresh supplies from Heaven
For every cup of water given. Tramp 1861
