Fyling Hall Lodge

- II
Former lodge to Fyling Hall, now a separate property. 1842, dated on sunk
lintel panel, with alterations. Vertically-tooled sandstone with carved ashlar
dressings. Purple slate roof with stone ridge, copings, kneelers and stacks.
L-plan with extruded porch; picturesque Gothic style. 1storey, 2 bays on each
face. Stepped plinth all round. Entrance front shows stable-type door in
gabled porch with big right kneeler. Plain boarded door in right return of
porch, possibly once open. Projecting gabled left bay has former 2-light
windows (lost mullion) with arms and motto PERSERVERANCE above. 1-light window
in right return of this bay. All windows double-chamfered, of one or two lights
(though most have lost mullions) under hollowed hoodmoulds with leafy stops.
Roofs have ridged gable copings, with a step half-way up each gable, and ball
finials on peaks and footstones. Left return shows central stack with 2 con-
joined diagonal shafts. One window on rear elevation retains its lattice iron
glazing; the others are plain casements. C020 rear extensions are not of
interest.
