Jays House and attached
Shown on OS sheet as Manor House. House circa 1320, attached to stable coach-house
range of C18 origin but heightened probably at time of house building. Front of
house tooled-and-mardined coursed sandstone; other elevations tooled without margins
as are 5 upper courses of outbuilding; remainder of outbuilding plain. Purple slate
roofs; lead on stable vents; stone ridge, copings, kneelers and stacks. House
L-plan with lower extruded rear wing. Outbuilding also L-plan, the whole forming
a shallow U-shape facing to rear. House front 2 storeys 4 bays. In second bay
a fancy-panelled door with patterned overlight under bracketed cornice hood.
16-pane sash above. Other windows 20-pane sashes (except for C20 canted bay at
left) with broad lintels and projecting cills. Prominent curved kneelers; corniced
end and left ridge stacks. Long, lower outbuilding range to left blank on this
side. House and outbuilding face opposite ways. 6-panel door on right return.
Rear elevation shows return wing of coach house on right, with double doors under
left windows. Other boarded doors and small sashes, and an inserted half dormer.
