6.10.69 Whitegates

House, C17 with alterations. Herringbone-tooled sandstone in large blocks; incised
rendered north (entrance) front. Tarred gable on seaward side. Pantiled roof with
stone copings and kneelers, brick stack. Entrance front 2 storeys, attic and tall
basement. Boarded basement door with 9-pane fixed light at right. Left weather-
boarded pent porch, rising almost to eaves, with Boarded door. A later C19 sash
on each floor at right and in a tall half dormer. Tall projecting wall at left is
remnant of other part of building, now fallen into sea. Right end curved coping and
kneeler, rebuilt chimney. West front has 9-pane sash on ground floor, C19 sash with
vertical bars on first floor and blank second floor. East (sea) front has 2 remain-
ing bays: paired 6-pane windows with bottom left opening section, 8-pane sash above
and small 6-pane sash to left. 8-pane sash in set-back gable end. Boarded door and
blocked window under old timber lintels at bottom right. This house was formerly
the residence of the celebrated marine painter, Dame Ethel Walker.
