Country house. C17 north-west wing, south wing of c1700-1710 with C19
addition, early C20 north-east wing and addition to north-west wing. South
wing for Tancred family, possibly Charles Tancred (d.1711). C20 sections
for the Hon J. H. Savile. Sandstone ashlar, Welsh slate roof to south wing,
stone slate roof to north-west wing, Westmorland slate roofs to C20
sections. Central hallway entry with cross wings to rear. Main facade: 3
storeys, the top one being an addition, 7 first floor windows. Projecting
quoins. 4-panel double door beneath divided overlight in moulded architrave
flanked by 2 tall narrow sashes and pairs of sashes with glazing bars
beneath keyed stone lintels. First floor band incorporating segmental
pediment over front door. First floor windows correspond with those below,
the central one being a sash with glazing bars. Second floor band. Second
floor: 3 sashes with glazing bars. Gable coping, shaped kneelers, end and
ridge stacks. Interior: entrance hall contains staircase of 3 flights round
open well. Square newels, turned bulbous balusters. Massive handrail
ramped up to newels. South-east room: mid C18 fittings from Methley Hall
near Castleford, now demolished. Fielded panelling with raised moulded
borders. Overdoor with scroll motif in panel and cornice. Chimneypiece
with eared surround and enriched mouldings. South-west room: reset C17
panelling with frieze with carved scrollwork. Early C18 door with 5
bolection-moulded panels. Similar panels on reveals towards hall. Office,
possibly former kitchen, in north-east wing has large C17 fireplace with
basket arch of chamfered voussoirs. Dining room in north-east wing contains
an outstanding late C16 - early C17 chimneypiece from Methley Hall. First
floor landing: original early C18 fittings: 4 doorways with bolection-
moulded architraves and 6-panel doors. Dado with moulded chair rail and
bolection-moulded panels. Late C18 moulded dentilled cornice. Central room
over hall: reset C17 panelling with inserted dado rail. Door on early C18
hinges. Fireplace, on splay in corner, has bolection-moulded surround.
Early C18 moulded cornice. South-east room: mid C18 fielded panelling and
6-fielded-panel door. Chimneypiece, from Methley Hall, of white marble with
red marble panel in centre of frieze. Carving in low relief on side panels
and frieze. South-west room: reset early C17 panelling with frieze with
carved scrollwork. Inserted C18 chair rail. Fireplace with bolection-
moulded architrave. House occupies site of St Andrew's Priory, a
Benedictine house for nuns founded c1150. Pevsner N. "Yorkshire: The North
