7/31 Barnclose House

- II

House and farm buildings of several builds. Probably C17 or earlier in
origin, with late C18 or early C19 heightening and extensions to left and
right. Vestigial cruck frame, sandstone rubble, pantile roof. Originally
3-room cruck-frame house with fireplace to left gable end and direct entry
to central room. Additional barn to right in place of demolished right end
room. At addition of room and cartshed to left, position of door moved to
current position opposite fireplace. 2 storeys, 5 first floor windows, the
central 3 being to house. Board door with one 2-light Yorkshire sash to
left and 2 to right. Blocked doorway between the right hand windows.
Cartshed: elliptical brick arch with casement to left beneath stone lintel
with herringbone tooling. Barn: stable door to extreme right. First floor:
2-light Yorkshire sashes to house, fixed windows to cartshed and barn.
Interior: cruck truss with saddle, collar and wall pegs embedded in wall
between house and barn. Central room: chamfered bressumer shows housing for
former heck, whose position is also visible on stone flag floor. Fire-
window in rear wall. Cow shed to extreme right not of special interest.
