Pair of semi-detached houses. 1914. By Parker and Unwin, for Joseph
Rowntree Village Trust. Lobby-entry plan with living room and scullery side
by side, and coal shed and WC in outbuilding. Brick with French tile roof.
2 storeys, 4 first-floor windows with shared central gable. Half-glazed
doors and standard "New Earswick" window panes throughout. Each cottage has
door beneath tiled canopy with 2-light and single-light casements to left
and right, and outbuilding to either end. First floor: 2-light casements to
gable and single-light casements to outer bays. Stacks removed. The
particular significance of New Earswick lies in its contribution to the
development of low cost housing in Britain. Experience gained and practices
introduced here were incorporated extensively into the Tudor Walters Report
of 1918 which was instrumental in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919.
Plans from New Earswick influenced the Government Manual on low cost housing
